A letter to the hard-working-but-currently-uninspired job seekers
I work at Panera Bread, a very cool bakery/café in Kansas City, and I’ve been asked to find a needle in a haystack. Original Bread was founded by people who believe in creativity, hard work, and integrity. We want to hire someone who is exceptional, so I’ve tried to create an exceptional job posting.
We’re looking for a person who is able to make a profound impact on our company culture on a daily basis. The position is entitled, "Assistant Manager"; but, I’m hoping to quickly nickname you the “People Wizard.” On your year anniversary maybe we will buy you a plaque that says, “Master of People”
I look forward to the day when Eric will say, “I wondered if asking you to handle the whole Food Cost section would be too overwhelming -- but, you really pulled it off!” I relish the thought of going over a checklist with you before a Via meeting and concluding, “Wow, you’ve thought of everything.”
I know you’re out there. You want to be a part of something great. You want to feel engaged and motivated, appreciated and successful. You love to organize, you love to impress, and you love to stay busy. It doesn’t matter what you studied in school and it doesn’t matter if you’ve ever worked in Excel. It matters if you are punctual, honest, meticulous, and cheerful. It matters if you can notice that our customers need the door held open, a cheerful smile, fresh hot coffee all day long or that the applicant that arrived early might be thirsty. We know it’s not HARD to do these things; but, it must come naturally to you to notice, care, and take action.
I dream of the day when Bill asks you to stand up at our monthly meeting so he can say, “You deserve a round of applause from all of us. The event we hosted at your store was a huge success and this is the kind of accomplishment that sets Panera Bread apart from other restaurants. Because of you, everything ran smoothly and professionally. You have made a major contribution to our reputation and our success.”
I know you’re currently employed and working hard, but feeling dissatisfied. I bet you’re considering going back to school. But, I suggest that it’s not about learning something new -- it’s about being a part of something exciting, something you can believe in and contribute to. We need a person who approaches his or her job with energy and pride. And, I bet you need to be a part of a company that values its employees and holds them to high standards.
